Daddy Yankee’s In Control

BY PHONZ L. THOMAS & AJA DIONNE

dy_promo

When most people think of Reggaeton, the first name to come to mind is Daddy Yankee. He is the embodiment of what a successful Reggaeton artist is with pushing more than eight million albums, endless number one hits to crossover on Billboard’s Latin music and Top 100’s charts, and Grammy wins and being recognized as a prominent individual by Time Magazine. Daddy Yankee’s phenomenal resume of work spanning almost two decades – which in addition to the music and his label El Cartel Records includes a fragrance line, TV Azteca, dipping into acting, philanthropic endeavors and humanitarian work with his children’s foundation Corazón Guerrero – which have all allowed him to continue to maintain his status as a top dog on the entertainment scene and a distinguished role model. Another factor that sets Daddy Yankee apart from other Latin artists has been his ability to separate and keep his personal life a distinct entity from his lifestyle as a celebrity, which is something many consider respectable in today’s line of prying media.

The San Juan, Puerto Rico native born Ramón Luis Ayala Rodríguez recently released his ninth studio album, Daddy Yankee Mundial in April. No stranger to dropping hit singles, the song “Descontrol” has been heard everywhere since its release on radio in the January; and with the music video that released in May to coincide as a visual for this single, it has made the song become something simply out of this world. In between touring and continuing promotion for Mundial, Full Blast Magazine was able to catch up with the Latin sensation and discuss his new project and the life of a Latin Music Mogul.

FBM: With the success of your most recent and ninth album, Daddy Yankee Mundial- which has been extremely successful peaking at  #1 on Billboard’s Latin Album chart, how do you continue to keep the creative energy flowing being a veteran in the music industry for fifteen years now?

Daddy Yankee I have been very influenced by digital technology and my biggest influence for this album was all of the culture and experiences touring the world.

FBM: How did you come up with the concept for the music video to “Descontrol?”

Daddy Yankee: The artistic direction for “Descontrol” impeccably tied in the look and feel of my album, “Mundial”. Carlos Perez, the director used dynamic camera movements and animation techniques throughout the video to create a unique visual experience which is what I wanted to bring to fans. Something new and fresh.

FBM: Barrio Fino was your most successful album, with multiple awards, notable collaborations and crossover appeal. Are you interested in making another record as big as “Gasolina” on Daddy Yankee Mundial?

daddy_yankee2Daddy Yankee: Artist expectations are really high right now, because, basically, I had a vision to make a concept album, and that’s how I started working on Mundial. I was touring the whole world, and I said, “How can I make a concept album using the influences of the entire world?” But I really began working the album with the first influence, which is the Caribbean. The whole Reggaeton scene. And I said, “What can the U.S. offer in terms of music?” And I said, “Hip Hop.” So, we have Hip Hop in the album. We got electronic music from Europe in one of the tracks. We’re using some of their vocal effects they use on the album. And all the music that I have received touring in South America, Mexico, Central America, we just put everything together and fused it all together with my urban essence.

FBM: You don’t speak much about your personal life.  Has this helped you stay grounded?

Daddy Yankee: Yes, very! The entertainment industry is a rough one so it’s nice to have a little privacy to maintain being grounded

FBM: Speaking of your stage name – what’s the story behind it? Where did the name Daddy Yankee come from?

Daddy Yankee: Daddy because that means top dog in Puerto Rican lingo and Yankee, because I played baseball when I was young and I love the NY Yankees.

FBM: What was it like working on The Bold & the Beautiful?

Daddy Yankee: They called me up and offered me the guest appearance, and I said YES!  It was a great opportunity to show everybody in that demographic my new record. They let me perform 3 songs. Basically for me it was easy because I played myself. I was Daddy Yankee. I was not another character. It was really cool and the cast was great to work with.

FBM: Lastly, Do you wear your own cologne, Daddy Yankee for Men and what made you decide to come out with the women’s fragrance, DYamante?

Daddy Yankee: Yes I do all the time.  All of my female fans kept asking me for one when and the men’s fragrance launched and it did so well. I decided it was time to give the ladies what they wanted!

TRADUCCION AL ESPAÑOL POR REYES MELVIN | TRANSLATION IN SPANISH BY MELVIN REYES

¿FBM: ¿Cómo te fue trabajando en The Bold & the Beautiful?

Me permito realizar 3 canciones. Estuve Daddy Yankee. No tenía otro personaje.
