Almighty Debt: A CNN Black In America Special
DOCUMENTARY REVIEW BY PHONZ L. THOMAS
On October 21, 2010 CNN will be début their latest in-depth documentary, “Almighty Debt: A CNN Black in America Special.” This particular documentary follows the life of congregation members and head pastor Rev. Dr. DeForest Soaries from First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens, New Jersey. A married couple losing their home, a teenage high school graduate trying to fund for his college education, and a fifty-eight year-old laid off former Vice President now seeking employment all have one thing in common – debt.
The special which will air at 9 p.m. eastern standard time, will follow these congregational members through their financial struggles. Their faith in God and Rev. Soaries sermons on ‘financial freedom’ help these members along through their struggles. “Being in debt is slavery,” Rev. Soaries explains to CNN reporter, Soledad O’Brien in the special. “When I’m paying last month’s bills with next month’s check, that’s slavery,” declares Rev. Soaries in the report.
What was most interesting about this documentary was learning the differences between Black middle-class and White middle-class. Rev. Soaries sums it up as Blacks having ‘middle-class income’ but unlike their White counterparts, they don’t possess ‘middle-class wealth.’ Rev. Soaries believes this is why most middle-class Blacks we’re hit the most hardest by the recent recession. “Almighty Debt” will make you cry, think, and devise a better plan for your finances if you already don’t have one. It’s a documentary that everyone from all walks of life and backgrounds should tune in to see. It gives some informative information about breaking the cycle of debt and crossing over into financial freedom. Be sure to tune in October 21st at 9 p.m.
