Finding a Title for Untitled
BY JAY DENSON
When you think of R&B male groups as it applies today, the genre is almost non-existent. Gone are the days of Jodeci, Dru-Hill, and Boyz II Men who dominated the charts during the 90’s. If you were to stop and ask the average person who listens to R&B music some favorites, you’re almost guaranteed to get a group existent from that era. DTP’s new R&B Group Untitled is attempting to change that perception. The Toronto based group signed a deal with DTP/Def Jam earlier this year and looking to bring in their own style for the new generation. Crediting early influences such as Jodeci, Dru-Hill, and Jagged Edge, their sexy single “The Champ” takes from the sultry singles that were a hit by the groups during that era. Although the group pens the name Untitled, members Intro, Nixx, and PB are trying to make a name for themselves in the R&B world.
How Long Have You Guys Been Singing Together?
Intro: We’ve been singing together since we were 6-years-old, we’ve been knowing each other for that long. We starting singing and taking it seriously pretty much around High School. Then up until last year was when we decided we wanted to go for the Gold and drove down to Atlanta, met up with Picasso our manager and he introduced us to Chaka Zulu, Jeff and them over here at DTP and they heard what we had and it was history after that.
Describe The Current Single “The Champ”
PB: We were trying to make a song that showed if you keep your guard down, there are girls out there that can really get the best of you. The theme is like a boxing theme, and the underlying theme is about a girl who can get the best of you. Most dudes walk around thinking they’re this they’re that, they’re Super-Fly, whatever you are, but at the same time, there’s always that one girl who will come in, and she will knock you out and there’s probably nothing you can do about it.
Who Do You Want Your Music To Reach Out To?
Nixx: We’re all about the ladies, strictly for the ladies but you know what, we actually do make music for everybody. Our goal is to try to make timeless music that whoever actually hears it can relate to it, can actually love it, respect it, and and will always appreciate it.
How Do You Guys Plan To Remain Relevant In A Lane That Is Non-Existent?
Intro: By doing exactly what you just said. Our influences the Dru-Hill, The Jagged Edges, we get it from that kind of stuff. By bringing back that timeless music, that real good music like in the 90’s era when you really heard something and it touched your soul and you wanted to put it on repeat and play it over and over again. By bringing that back, we’re going to stick around and be relevant for a very long time.
PB: We’re just going to be giving the people what they want really and that’s good music right? It’s been a while since that real R&B group has been out so we’re just trying to come through like a breath of fresh air.
Is There a Difference Between The Canadian Audience and The States?
Intro: Yea, it’s definitely different; I’m just going to shoot straight from the hip here. The Canadian audience, although they appreciate R&B music and they appreciate what comes to the stage, what tends to happen in Canada is, it’s a little bit more Pop oriented and I guess artists with more of an Urban sound don’t really get heard as much. It’s harder to breakout from Canada when your doing Urban and R&B music than supposed if you were doing some Pop or some Lady GaGa type stuff.
What Was The Purpose of Naming The Group Untitled?
Nixx: Our name came about just like that; it was a spur of the moment kind of thing. We had a talent show and we were practicing so much that when we got to the showcase, the lady asked us what our name was. We started saying “lets call ourselves this name, lets call ourselves that name”, and we just decided to name ourselves Untitled. So the host goes on stage and says, “Next up are these three guys and their name is uh, Untitled.” So we went on stage ad we ripped the show and we had the ladies screaming Untitled and we actually won that showcase.
Intro: After that we pretty much kept the name because with that much of a response from the ladies, and the screaming and how any numbers I got that night, ain’t no way in hell I’m a change that name. But actually the name has grown on us now and it actually means no limits, no boundaries. You can’t put us in a box no more as just this R&B group.
