TEAM FULL BLAST
Triplebeam Pictures and AllHipHop.com partnered up to deliver what will be the movie of the season, King of Paper Chasin’ which hits movie theaters in selected cities on October 15th, 2010. The movie follows the life of thug turned underground New York City rap superstar/mogul Carter “Cart” Blanche played by Dwayne “DL” Clark. It starts off with planned robbery gone wrong, and one Cart’s close comrades, Uglyman (Stephen Williams) being sent to prison for a couple years.
The movie then progresses swiftly by fast forwarding to Cart’s music career which is aided by his right hand man, Dell (Jason Lanzar Rivera) who is Cart’s most ‘ride or die’ friend. “When people see Dell I hope they see ambition, a calm, quiet yet very naive strength,” actor Jason Lanzar Rivera states. Cart and Dell pick up Uglyman when he gets released from prison, and that’s the point where things in Cart’s life get shaken up slightly. The movie then continues on leaving viewers on the edge of their seats with various different twists and turns of betrayal aimed towards Cart from the ones he considers close to him. But just as soon as you think you already know how this story is going to end, a monkey wrench gets thrown in the mix and the movie ends in a way you will not even see coming.
Other cast members of this edge of your seat film include Joe Soma who plays Agent Richardson, Dennis L.A. White as JB and Lauren Hooper who plays Rachel a music representative from Highway Records that has heard Cart’s mixtapes, and reaches out to him to get him signed to the label. As she reaches out for Cart Blanche the rapper, she ends up stumbling on Carter Banche the man and a little something happens with that situation.
What is unique about King of Paper Chasin’ is it is a story loosely based off of Dwayne “DL” Clark’s experiences coming up and he actually funded most of the movie with his dual record label, Triplebeam Entertainment. “I just relived many of the moments that you see in the film. Though the film is somewhat embellished a very good portion stem from actual events. For me it was the natural progression from shooting music videos. I felt not only could we use it as a tool to feature my music but at the same time showcase the other things I can do,” states DL Clark exclusively to Full Blast Magazine.
What is also enjoyable about this particular movie is each cast members relation to the character they portray. You tend to almost forget you’re at the movies watching this, as it seems like something happening before your eyes in real life. When Jason Lanzar Rivera was asked about his real-life similarities to Dell’s characteristics he says “I don’t find Dell and Cart to be all that different, just at different stages in their lives. So if I have a similarity with one I believe I have with both but Dell is me magnified. Dell’s hunger and ambition is something we still have in common. His drive to prove that he’s worthy PR deserving of this opportunity is a feeling I have still to this day.”
While it’s not uncommon to see musicians and actors run crisscross in the same arena, it was interesting to find out that DL Clark agreed many in the entertainment industry should share this same work vigor to maintain dual tasks. “The operative word is entertainment. If you are in the business of entertaining I believe you shouldn’t limit yourself to just one facet. But it also depends on the talent aspect as well,” as DL Clark laughs a little modestly. He also adds, “I have a strong passion for both but if I had to choose one it would be music.”
Jason Lanzar Rivera also shares this same vision as a Spoken-word artist in addition to his acting. “Spoken-Word is a form, maybe the oldest form off story telling. So as a story teller I was able to bring certain aspects of spoken-word to tell Dells story. Stage presence, beats (pauses) are two things that both actors and spoken-word artist share. Untamed Talent is a poetry group began by Stephen J. Williams (Uglyman). He and I built a friendship outside of the film world and realized we share a love for the spoken-word. We would actually spit different poems to each other on set in-between takes so Untamed Talent was a natural and organic step. We perform numerous poems speaking on everything from the ghettos we come from, love for women we share, or pain we experience. We share these experiences at numerous locations throughout NYC predominantly The NuyoRican Poetry Cafe spreading the gift God gave us. There are many facets and bridges the two worlds share but a sense of audience engagement might be the biggest similarity.”
Everyone is strongly encouraged to check out King of Paper Chasin’ in a theater near you. You won’t be disappointed you did.
