Discovering Tinie Tempah
BY PHONZ L. THOMAS
Some of the most remarkable recording artists in history have emerged out of the United Kingdom to ‘cross the pond’ and grab the attention of American listeners. Twenty-two year old songwriter and rapper, Patrick Okogwu known to his fans by his stage name, Tinie Tempah will be the next to follow that trend. The Electo/Hip-Hop and Grime artist has plans to drop his October 2010 UK Platinum selling debut album, Disc-Overy in the United States in March of 2011. The album which has received a wide range of praises and reviews in Europe, features Kelly Rowland, Labrinth, Swedish House Mafia and Ellie Goulding among many other great powerhouses of musical talent, is really something that America has never really heard in today’s music scene before.
Tinie Tempah’s first single, “Pass Out” dropped on UK Singles Chart and UK R&B Chart as #1 and solidified its place in the top ten position for four months after being released. The remix version of the track featured Snoop Dogg, therefore drawing even more attention to this newly found sensation. This made his label, EMI feel the need to work fast at advertising his talents in the Western hemisphere. A push for his current rap ballad single, “Invincible” which features Kelly Rowland can be heard all over the Internet. Tinie Tempah has since then been doing promotional events in the U.S. including a mixtape that dropped featuring Eminem, Jay-Z and Snoop Dogg, to build up anticipation of the album’s release in the states.
Full Blast Magazine had the chance to catch up with Tinie Tempah while in New York City on promo. A very respectable young man whose take on music and marketing himself and his brand we found to be quit out of the ordinary, yet motivating. Being that this is our Holiday Issue, we felt the need to give our viewers a chance to actually see what Tinie Tempah is about through an interview with Full Blast TV; where he discussed his single with Kelly Rowland, how he got his break in the music industry and even how to properly make tea. In addition to his web site, be sure to follow Tinie Tempah on Facebook, Twitter and his YouTube channel.
