DOGGUMENTARY
BY PHONZ L. THOMAS
While Jay-Z and Alicia Keys may have had East Coast music listeners in an “Empire State of Mind” in 2010, Snoop Dogg’s anticipated release of Doggumentary dropping March 29th will have the West Coast singing “EL LAY” in 2011. The single, which features Marty James and was produced by Scoop DeVille is a true ode to the Southern California lifestyle. Doggumentary will be Snoop’s eleventh studio album releasing on Doggystyle/Priority Records, and from what the Full Blast Team heard at a listening session in New York recently, there will be no disappointments on this project.
Snoop enlisted some of the hottest producers for Doggumentary including The Gorillaz, KanYe West, David Banner, and Trylogy. Some of the tracks we loved during the listening session included: “This Weed Is Mines” featuring Wiz Khalifa, “Dirty Dancing” featuring Trey Songz, “Gang Bang Rookie” featuring Pilot and “Something Like This” featuring The Gorillaz. The album overall puts you in a Cali state of mind. One song that really stood out was “Don’t It Fell Good” featuring NE-YO, where Snoop shares his appreciation for life and has a live/big band sound to it. Our favorite single off the album is for the track, “Wet” which was produced by The Cataracs (Far*East Movement “Like A G6”). The track which Snoop announced over New Year’s Eve as the song for Prince William’s bachelor party has recently been blowing up music charts for its equally hot music video. The single has been received so well, that Snoop kicked off a “Get Wet” Tour to promote the coming album.
While at the listening session, we heard a track called “Superman” in which Snoop and Willie Nelson teamed up on that has a country meets Hip Hop sound and is a chat between the two known marijuana enthusiasts about how someone around them is always saying they need to put the bongs down. It’s a very comical track which we hope makes the final cut on Doggumentary, or at least is a bonus track. Over all, Doggumentary delivers the nostalgic Snoop Dogg sound that we’ve come to know and appreciate. Be sure to pick up your copy when it drops March 29th.
