“CR” is the Show

BY HANNIBAL ALEXANDER If you feel like the current R&B scene is just recycled beats, concepts and hooks, you are not the only one! Finding a Title for Untitled

BY JAY DENSON When you think of R&B male groups as it applies today, the genre is almost non-existent. Gone are the days of Jodeci, Dru-Hill, and Boyz II Men who dominated the charts during the 90’s. If you were to stop and ask the average person who listens to R&B music some favorites, you’re almost [...]

Songs We Love On Rewind

BY RITA FOSTER

hit-the-rewind-button-and-listen-again

“Love is patient, love is kind…” The 2010 songs about love will make you hit “rewind”.  In 2010, no two love songs were created equally.  This year’s love songs weren’t all about hugs and kisses, and romance.  No, they were a diverse mix of love remembered, love gone wrong, love wanted, and love immortal.  Some made you want to dance and some made you want to cry.  Some made you feel sexy while others made you want to die. The alternative sound of the Plain White T-‘s “Rhythm of Love” got hearts a beatin’ and toes a tapin’ in 2010.  This is the quintessential happy, romantic love song that is truly all hugs and kisses. Bruno Mars melted everyone’s hearts with his lyrics, “When I see your face, There’s not a thing that I would change.  Cause you’re amazing, Just the way you are” in his single “Just the Way You Are”.

Whereas the lyrics in the bubblegum pop song “Love Like Woe” by The Ready Set gave us a different view of love.  Singer Jordan Witzigreuter described his lover as “a windstorm… a shooting star… a hurricane…speed train… and a moving car” for a good reason.  Love is hard to keep up with! Dance, dance, dance… Love can make you dance, dancing can make you fall in love, and so can drinking!  Just ask Usher. He collaborated with Pit Bull to create “DJ Got Us Fallin’ In Love”.  Edward Maya & Vika Jigulina couldn’t have disagreed more.  They wanted to know,” When you gonna stop breaking my heart” in their techno dance hit “Stereo Love”.  So, where did that leave Ke$ha?  She danced around like a “…love sick crack-head” because, “Your Love is My Drug”.
Who wanted love in 2010?  Justin Bieber, that’s who!  He got the tweens a screamin’ with his song “Somebody to Love”.  Neon Trees wanted you to “take a bite of my heart tonight” with their song “Animal” while Lady Antebellum can’t help but “Need You Now”. The queen of teenage love, Taylor Swift, spent the year reminiscing about her past love with “Back to December” and “Mine” while pop queen Kat Perry had a light-hearted and sexy “Teenage Dream”. You can’t talk about love songs without mentioning recording artist Ne-Yo.  His song “One in a Million” woos the ladies while Monica’s soulful hit “Love All Over Me” lets you know that she is “completely covered up your love.”

The flip side of happy romantic love in 2010, you got love gone bad…terribly bad.  Christina Perri’s pop single “Jar of Hearts” is a tale of a heart breaker that is “Running ’round leaving scars, Collecting your jar of hearts, And tearing love apart”.  Then, love became abusive in Eminem and Rihanna’s “Love the Way You Lie”.  Finally, love got down right miserable with Maroon 5’s “Misery”.

There were artists this year that were ready to fight for love.  Sade came back in 2010 after a long 10 year break with, “Soldier of Love”.  Singer songwriters Neil Young and David Cook both had songs titled, “Love and War” this year.  While David’s, “heart is in retreat” on his Timepiece album “All is Fair in Love and War,”  Neil Young sang, “The saddest thing in the whole wide world is to break the heart of your lover”. What’s the best way to show your love for someone?  Immortalize them in a song!  Stone Sour’s Cory Taylor did just that.  He wrote, “Say You’ll Haunt Me” for his wife roaring, “Together, together we’ll be together, together forever I BELONG TO YOU”.  If that’s not love, I don’t know what is.  Rock on Cory!

It is abundantly clear that 2010 was the year for artists to express their feelings about love. So, take some time out of your day and play the love songs dating game. Whether it’s R&B, Pop, Alternative or Hip-Hop; Love is a universal language. Don’t be afraid to stray away from the genres that you are comfortable with.  You might find yourself falling in love with music all over again.
